Pour inaugurer cette grande œuvre, le roi Alphonse XIII se rend au barrage de Conde del Gualdalhorce. Depuis lors, cette route est connue sous le nom de Caminito del Rey.
It was usual to move people along the Caminito del Rey route during the day and at night because it had electricity. It was an important way of communication because the inhabitants of El Chorro could be in contact and the children could go to school. But over the years, the effects of nature left some sections of the Caminito del Rey impassable.
Many adventurous and brave people walked along its narrow footbridges. After several fatal accidents, access to the Caminito del Rey way was closed for several years. In 2009, restoration work began to prepare the path, and in 2015 it will be opened again to the public. A great effort has been made to unify this route again.
